How to Make a Swab/Squeegee
I'll show you how to make cheap and easy swabs that work very well!
1) Get a bandanna, any color will work, use the square type found at most dollar stores, and make sure to get the cloth ones.
2) Put a nickel in the dead center when lying flat on the table and trace around it with a felt pen or sharpie.
3) Now cut from the corners to the center mark where the nickel was.
4) Now all four corners are cut between each corner to your mark.
5) Now you should have eight cuts towards the center. Take and make a SMALL slit in the center just big enough to put a piece of loth clothesline through; this slit will be in the center of the nickel outline.
6) Cut your clothesline about 1 foot longer than the barrel.
7) Go to the local hardware store and get a faucet washer (rubber) just the right size to fight in your barrel a little lose and put one end of the clothesline through. (Tip: Light end of line to seal)
8) Now we should have a piece of rope with a washer on one end. Tie a tight knot close to the end of the rope and slide washer (cone or beveled side up if there is one) all the way against the knot.
9) Now slide the cut cloth down over the rope to the washer.
10) Now burn the other end and put it through the barrel and wrap it around your hand and pull. It will be tight!
List of Materials:
Cloth Clothesline
Rubber washer to fit inside of the barrel a little bit loose.
Bandanna, cloth type.
Now try it and let me now how it turns out.
Anti Scratch Guard For a Barrel
Ok, here is another great idea to try. Go to the local hardware store and go to the plumbing section. Now go to the pipe insulation. What you want is a foam type of pipe insulation, NOT FIBERGLASS. Pick a piece of insulation for 3/4 copper pipe. Buy 1 piece for up to 3 or 4 barrels because it comes in 4-6 foot lengths. I will usually also have self adhesive taped edges. Just cut 1 inch longer than the barrel ad pee tape and press edges together. You will have a foam tube to put your barrels in!! If you don't have taped edges you can just use contact cement. If you have a friend who insulates pipes, get him/her to get you some "armourflex". It is a one piece rubber type insulation usually not found in hardware stores. This rubber type is the best I have found for these protectors.
